Wyoming Pronghorn Hunt-unusual photo!
«

Got back from the annual pronghorn hunt. The #'s are way down up north of Gillette! The ranch we hunt on normally has 500+ head of Pronghorn on it and they had about 200. Our party of 4 were able to get our Pronghorn by around 3 pm, but many parts of the ranch that are normally packed with animals were flat empty. We also normally see a couple hundred deer on the land. we saw 4. (They got hit really hard at this ranch with late snow and the herd is still way down in #'s). We were not hunting mulies this year, but it was sad to see the #'s still so low. probably 2-4 more years before it comes back.
My buddy and my brother-in-law were both able to get their first big game animals so that was neat to see! They managed to pick up a couple whitetail doe over near the powder river the next day.
I had a very odd experience though. I shot my animal with a new bullet type (Cutting Edge Non-Con HP) I was investigating the exit wound and bullet performance with great intent. After a few moments, my dad said, "hey Rob, check out the cows"
I turned around and 10 yards from me was a herd of about 40 black Angus cows! They surrounded me and were just fascinated with what we were doing. There was not a cow within 400 yards when I took my shot, but the whole herd came running over once we started work on the Pronghorn!
Anyway,

It was a great hunt. It's not a challenging hunt, but a great chance to spend time with Dad, enjoy the company of some good down to earth Wyoming folks, watch two buddies bag thier first big game animals and learn to process them, and get some high-quality meat for the table!

To all of you that have viewed these threads on Wyoming and said to yourself "Man that would be fun if I only had the money..."
Just do it. This was a great trip and some really great memories were made on this one. I had an unforgettable time. Thanks Rob.
P.S. The Antelope tasted better then the Alfalfa raised Whitetail. Steph and I both agreed to both of our surprise.

Most of our pronghorns were great eating too. I see one charlois cow though, our very best was a angus/charlois with a 16 inch eye, well into the choice grade and about 13 months old at 1200 pounds.
